Jerry Hart Memorial Scholarship Fund
On January 26th, 2009, CASL lost, but it wasn’t just a game that was lost, it was one of its own. The unfortunate passing of Jerry Hart, member of the ’92 CASL Premier Soccer Team, was felt through out the soccer community. Since then, Jerry has remained in many hearts and his memories will continue to be felt on and off the soccer field. Through Jerry’s dedicated family and friends, the Jerry Hart Scholarship Fund was created.
The idea to this scholarship came about when Shamit Prabhu was sitting in class and thinking about how to commemorate Jerry Hart, just as Kris Marceno was commemorated through the Kris Marceno Foundation. Shamit then noticed the famous Livestrong bracelet and thus, the Jerry Hart bracelet was born. He contacted Jerry’s mother, Becky Hart, and soon organized the creation of the Jerry Hart Bracelet.
Through a Facebook group, lots of interest was generated for this bracelet to insure that this effort wouldn’t be futile. A few ideas for what the design of the bracelet were generated but in the end, the bracelet would have a soccer ball and the words, “Jerry Hart 1/9/93-1/26/09 Forever in our Harts.”
There were 200 bracelets ordered and both Shamit and Becky sold these bracelets through the friends and families that shared in the memory of Jerry. Many people were seen with these red bracelets and the end result was not only the lasting memory of Jerry but the beginning of the Jerry Hart Memorial Scholarship Fund. This initial scholarship amount will be awarded by the CASL Scholarship Committee, to a CASL Classic Division student-athlete, who displays an academic integrity and a yearning to excel in the sport which Jerry loved the most, soccer. As Jerry would say, “Don’t be :( be :)”, and that is exactly the message this scholarship is meant to spread. The lucky CASL Classic Division student-athlete to receive this scholarship will have an angel by their side.
Jerry's CASL jersey, he wore in picture above, is framed and mounted at CASL Office for all visitors to observe in his memory.
