Veteran soccer coach brings extensive coaching experience and a vast college network to CASL

Raleigh, NC –Gary Buete, CASL Executive Director, named Dan Popik as Older Boys Director. Popik comes to CASL from the University of Wisconsin – Green Bay where he served as head coach for the men’s soccer program since 2012. Popik will begin work at CASL immediately and will coach the U14, U15, and U16 Boys Red teams this fall season.

“Dan Popik is a proven leader in coaching. His professional and collegiate playing experience, coupled with successful collegiate coaching and recruiting, will be an asset to all of our older boys players. He knows what it takes to get to the next level and has a vast network of college coaches that will bring added value to our players and staff. CASL is excited to have someone with Dan’s experience and passion for player development leading our older boys classic program,” said Gary Buete.

Popik returns to the Raleigh area after spending time playing at the professional level and coaching in college athletics. His professional experience includes stints with the Columbus Crew (2006), Los Angeles Galaxy (2004-05) and Milwaukee Rampage (2000-03). Popik has established himself over the years as a valuable coach to have on staff. He spent six seasons with the North Carolina State University Wolfpack Men’s soccer program before moving to Greenville, SC, where he joined the Furman University men’s coaching staff.  He was ranked by CollegeSoccerNews.com as a “Top 20 Assistant Coach in 2011.” Through his college coaching tenure, Popik coached players and teams to successful seasons.

“I am excited to be back in the Raleigh area and to be coaching at the youth level again,” said Popik. “My college coaching experience will help me develop CASL coaches and players in the older boys program. CASL is the premier youth soccer club in the country, and I’m honored to be part of the staff. It is my goal to help take CASL, our players, and our teams to the highest level of play.”

Popik brings extensive coaching experience to the Older Boys Director position. He is a United States Soccer Federation (USSF) “A” License coach, a NSCAA National Goalkeeping Diploma recipient, and a USSF Development Academy scout. At the youth level, Popik has coached teams to state cup championships and regional appearances. He also has served as a goalkeeper staff coach with the North Carolina ODP program.

Popik received his Bachelor of Science in Sports Management and a Masters of Science in Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Management from North Carolina State University.  Popik and his wife, Jodie, have a son, Gavin.

The Capital Areas Soccer League was the first youth soccer organization to serve youth soccer players in the greater Wake County area.  Founded in 1974, CASL is one of the largest and most recognizable youth soccer clubs in the nation with more than 8,000 players. Soccer America has named CASL one of the top ten youth soccer clubs in America. The mission of the Capital Area Soccer League (CASL) is to provide positive and high-quality instructional and competitive youth soccer opportunities at all levels of play that enhance character, community and the love of the game for a diverse membership of children ages 4-18 and their families across Wake County and to serve as a community partner to improving the quality of life in Wake County.
